This is South Tyrol, an ideal place for relaxing family holidays.
The South Tyrolean vineyard: the villages of Terlan, Caldaro and Termeno along the wine road have extraordinary scenic beauty. Various routes offer opportunities to experience Tyrolean traditions and multiple flavors of the orchards and vines that crown the sunny hills and meadows: apples, chestnuts, wine, speck...

Lakes in South Tyrol
Lake Carezza with the Latemar Group reflecting in its crystal colored waters, Lake Caldaro, Lake Anterselva and Lake Braies, jewel of the Dolomites in the Fanes - Sennes – Braies Nature Park are the most well-known, with numerous others also worth visiting.

Castles: South Tyrol has 350 castles and fortresses. Many may be visited and some have the possibility of overnight stays. Especially worth a visit: Roncolo Castle, Tirolo Castel in Merano, Mareccio Castle in Bolzano, Forte Castle (at the entrance of Gardena Valley) in Isarco Valley and the majestic Tures Castle in Aurina Valley.
South Tyrol, sport and entertainment throughout the year:
The stunning scenery of the South Tyrol offers families many opportunities for sport and fun: easy walks and hikes through woods and blooming meadows, around lakes and orchards in bloom, trekking to mountain huts and shelters. A little further up, to the Dolomites, climb via ferrate paths or follow an experienced alpine guide. Other possibilities abound as well: cycling, mountain biking, horse riding, golf, swimming, tennis, rafting, paragliding…
Wintertime: modern ski lifts and perfectly groomed slopes of varying skill levels, ski schools, ski kindergartens, the allure of the Dolomites and the Sella Ronda (an exciting ski circuit around the Sella, crossing 4 mountain passes, all included in one ski pass). Cross-country skiing and skating are also available.
Shopping and culture in South Tyrol
The capital of the South Tyrol is Bolzano: covered walkways (porticos), an archaeological museum, Piazza Walther, and the characteristic fruit and vegetable market in Piazza delle Erbe, in the historic center. Other charming cities: Merano, famous for its thermal springs and known as the garden of South Tyrol, Bressanone, town of the bishop in Isarco Valley and finally Brunico, the major city of Pusteria Valley.
South Tyrolean crafts of woodworking and weaving are steeped in a tradition handed down over the centuries.
A land and its people
In South Tyrol, customs and traditions are deeply held, whether it be through traditional attire worn on special occasions (such as religious festivals) or re-enactments of cultural rituals for tourists. Musicians also dress in Tyrolean attire. Customs and traditions have remained intact in Sarentina Valley and the Ladin valleys, like Gardena Valley, Badia Valley, Fassa Valley, and the Valley of Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Five valleys of the Dolomites represent the linguistic and cultural area of the Ladin: Gardena Valley, Badia Valley, Fassa Valley, Arabba-Livinnalongo and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The Dolomites and the Ladin
Peaks, glaciers, alpine meadows, pastures, climbing via ferrate, high altitude paths and blue lakes. The South Tyrol without mountains? It would be like a sea without water. The most famous are the Dolomites, les Dolomites in Ladin, named after its founder, Dolomieu. The highest peak is Marmolada at 3342 m. The most noted: the Tre Cime di Lavaredo in Alta Val Pusteria, the Sella Group with its impressive charm, the Pisciadu', the Sassolungo and the Geisler. The classic scenic route of the Dolomites that connects Bolzano and Dobbiaco passes through Gardena Valley, Badia Valley (Corvara) and Falzarego Pass (or rather the Sella and Pordoi or Cortina d’Ampezzo).
The South Tyrol boasts a cutting edge tourist infrastructure, with inexpensive rooms in B & B’s, apartments for rent in private homes, cozy farm stays, family-run hotels and residences to luxury 4 and 5 star hotels.
Tourist associations offer summer programs for children with nature-filled fun, including farm visits.
South Tyrol is something special, magical! For your next vacation, come to South Tyrol and the Dolomites!
